Groupe sida Genève's AIDS expert: 'Emphasis on cure misplaced'

The fight against HIV continues and already this year scientists have reported what they say is ground-breaking progress. In March, doctors in Mississippi reported that a baby born with HIV had been "functionally cured" after she was given anti-retroviral drugs within hours of being born. Reports have followed which suggest that, with early treatment, adults infected with HIV might also be able to control the virus without needing further therapy. So could there be a functional cure for HIV/AIDS?

That's the topic of a public talk given in Geneva at Groupe sida Genève yesterday evening, by Professor Bernard Hirschel, former head of the HIV unit at Geneva's University Hospital. Professor Hirschel spoke to World Radio Switzerland's Dave Goodman. (click to listen)
